Code

All the code that makes the noise effect is open source and on this GitHub repo: https://github.com/brantagames/noise-shader. I also added it to the Godot Asset Library: https://godotengine.org/asset-library/asset/3448.

the screenshots are great

(+2)(-1)

Not working at all
When I open the game it closes itself

I have the same problem

(+1)(-5)

hurts my eyes and the sound is ear shattering by default (and headache inducing even after being turned down).
this is barely horror, this is barely a game. what.

(+1)

it's mainly to show off the shader I guess

neat lil project, though I'd presonally classify it as unsettling more than horror (tho i didn't try scary mode yet)

Also I wonder if you could use the 3D P-something effect (with one-eyed sunglasses) overlaid atop colored objects to make them 3D - for a future demo, perhaps

Its REALLY GOOD, the sinewaves overlapping is horrifying i love it

(+4)(-1)

Hi, semi experienced Godot user here. You might wanna scale the UI elements down (when you scale them down, they can go into subpixels, unlike when you change their size to be smaller, which keeps them locked into the pixel grid). You might also wanna embed the PCK (in the export options) so that it doesn’t require extracting to play, and also export it as a web build for easier play.

(+2)

Thank you for the feedback! I set intentionally set the resolution of the game low and set the stretch mode to viewport. That's why its so incredibly low res. I did this because it made the scaling easier and the effect more consistent across resolutions (and because I was lazy). I completely forgot to embed the .pck file on the linux build, I might do that. The reason it isn't on the windows one is because of signing

This concept is super cool, and the sound design works really well for horror! I came from the video, so I knew how to make the colours extra spooky.
I can't seem to figure out what scary mode means
I'm also not sure if I got to an ending, it seems to just be a loop
Either way, the idea is very cool.

I feel like if maybe the static noise went really slowly in the other direction, so everything on the screen was constantly moving, and the screen had a CRT shader applied with lots of bloom, and the audio went through some kind of impulse response of a small room, it could be super cool. It would look like you're playing some creepy "broken" game on an old tv set alone in your room. There's some really awesome potential for an even scarier game here!

Also thank u for the linux version! I subscribed :)

For me I was "looping" between two places, but I found a way to "end" the game (i.e. it closed itself as a way of telling me I got where it wanted me to go).

I'm glad you liked it! I would love to see someone take this concept farther, there definitely is potential. I feel like combining regular rendering with the noise effect would be really cool for a game. Also the linux version was by far the easiest to export. It's mac and windows that are hard

Erm...

(+2)

That happened to me as well. The game went in the proper position once I closed it and reopened it, maximising it while it was booting up

And now it happened to me too!

(+1)

Same issue here. It fixed itself when I left clicked, I think.

(+1)

Yeah sorry about that, I'm not sure why it happens

Is the game closing itself the end?

Yes

(1 edit) (+1)

I'm Super lost.... but this is wat I have found so far...
So spoilers ahead..

Ok, so Walking around I found a Ring next to a Teddy Bear that teleported me to a black room with spining hearts and fallning cubes, you can find the ring by hearing a phone sound
Then I got teleported back to the main area, where the objects seemed to be place in a different order, you have to find the... pimenton (In spanish) and next to it is another ring that sends you to the same heart room.
After that you get back to the main map but there's a line that before seemed faded but now it's persistent, after walking to it a man just appeared and jumpscared me and i f*** jumped off my chair.
Then we retur to the main area but without the shader, then I walk around and near the bear you can hear the ring sound but nothing happens, After walking to the same spot where the man appeared the game crashes.

I managed to do the same but the man did not appear the second time, I wonder if that's all of it.
It was a fun experience but it can get frustrating after a while and probably will replay it again with friends.

where is the second ring i cannot find it?

this keeps triggering my antivirus as a wacatac.bm!l thing. i'm not sure why

godot, python based .exe and other unusal files seem to trigger it, check with virustotal maybe?

What do I do once it is 3D

I think it's an interesting idea, but I can't figure out how to actually get to the horror part of it, or really how to progress in general. On my last playthrough a few minutes ago, I found the ring that brought me to the place with the hearts, and I thought I heard other footsteps, but then I guess I walked too far, since I was brought back to the first area, except the teleport ring was nowhere to be found, and I think some of the objects were moved.

There is another

Really neat idea, happy you made the resources available to anyone :D

(+1)

i screenshot the game (ignore my other monitor on the right)

I walked backwards into what ended my game once I was lucid

(1 edit) (+2)

You're gonna force people to invent GIF screenshots, mister

And then your entire game will just be pointless

already exists

seems like a good game if it wasnt so confusing on what to do. i clicked on the game and instantly got blasted by the loud noises. paused to turn down the audio just to see that only option was sensitivity. i feel like there should be a bit more of an explanation on what to do as i have no idea why i went into the next room

(1 edit) (+1)(-1)

i quit after sitting in the same room stuck with banana and teapot

(1 edit) (+5)

(probably spoiler)

I find it funny how the three screenshots on this page seem completely meaningless until you click on one of them and then switch from the second to the third one and back, where a trollface flashes for a brief moment on each switch XD

(1 edit) (+12)

(Spoilers)

this moment was truly the scariest thing i've ever seen

(+2)

I feel like this would work incredibly well in VR

(+4)

This in VR would hurt my eyes

(+2)

Having that pair of sunglasses on my desk for months finally paid off... Great experience!

i love this i am crazy i got to the horror part where everything turend into black and white and the noise whas gone and i saw the man

This game is so cool!! the shader is really interesting, you could probably do a weird thing where you color objects in the frame in a fuzzy way that if screenshotted would just look like fields of color

(+1)

Was a very cool experience, but I wish there was more to the horror of it. This feels like the perfect game to have things appear in the corners of your vision.

Whether you update it or not, I liked the idea. Good job

(+1)

Thank you! I have no plans to update it. I released the code so somebody might take it further

I'm really glad you made it, I hope someone does use it!

(+9)

There is a troll face if you switch between the second and third screenshot.

(+4)

This properly messed up my depth perception. My eyes still hurt. Great job!

(+2)

Thanks for sharing all of this, it's really interesting.

(+4)

YAY! COOL EXPERIENCE! gave me headache. WOULD RECOMMEND 10/10 THOUGH i didn't find the scary part. PRETTY COOL EFFECT

(+2)

wtf. sindi mic will come to your house (a guinea pig) (not actually)

(+5)

cool effect, but couldn’t figure out the scary part/objective

(+1)

me neither

(+3)

Thank you, cool experience!

I have a bug report though; at least with my setup (2 monitors, 4k on left at 1080p on right), the game was unable by default; the window opened mostly off the bottom of the screen, split across both screens, and the standard windows options to Move it wouldn't come up. I had to turn off my second screen to get it to come up as intended and be playable. Worth the little effort, but a lot of people might not know how to deal with this...

(+1)

Glad you liked it! Also thank you so much for the info, I hadn't tested it with two monitors. I'll see if I can fix the issue

(+1)

I downloaded the game on windows, extarcted it, double clicked on Motus and the same thing happened!

(+2)

This happened to me the first time I launched it, but then on a relaunch it worked fine

i launched it multiple times and it did not work

(1 edit) (+1)

pressing windows+shift+left/right arrow keys will fit it correctly.

Normally that shortcut is meant to transfer apps to different monitors, but i found its quite useful when fullscreen games dont fit right by themselves

I just changed which fullscreen mode the game uses in the windows build. Download the newest version and let me know if anything change

(+1)

normally with effects like these I adjust rather quickly but with this one I was just confused and bamboozled beyond comprehension. good job!

I downloaded and extracted the file but when I open it, it just shows a small black window that closes itself, anyone knows what this is?

Sorry about that, what platform are you playing on?

(+1)

I suffer the same problem as you! pls help!

It could be a graphics driver issue, I'm not entirely sure. I updated the windows export again to include D3D12 which might fix something. Sorry about all the issues!

(+1)

hhyper realistic graphics ^o^

(+1)

i cant figure out the horror part :( where is it??? i type in scary at the title screen every time but it always looks normal

(+8)

screenshot for proof?

Hey sorry about that! What platform are you playing on?

same, win 10 64

Just tested it in windows, everything seems to be working. Maybe you haven't gotten to it yet?

(1 edit)

hi, its windows! i played for an hour or two and walked around the whole time, just looking at all the same things.. i did find a room with hearts and stuff and how everything went one color but then i just ended up back in the first room and i couldnt find ANYTHING

Have you tried it again? Like Branta said, play for a while longer because it definitely worked for me!

like i said in my other comment, i played for an hour or two and i only found one thing but then i just ended up walking back to the first room every time or  hitting  a wall and getting teleported back

(1 edit)

I like how the picture is just TV static

(+1)

If you click through the pictures quickly it's a trollface

Wow. I really love this. Is it the end  when the noise is gone and I get closed out of the game or should I keep searching for secrets or something?

This is insanely trippy and makes for a great horror experience.

The volume is absurdly loud though with no way to adjust it, I had to lower my volume to 6% to it was at an acceptable level.
